What Your Cleaning Website Looks Like on a Phone (It's Probably Bad)
We tested 837 cleaning websites on mobile. 62% have non-clickable phone numbers, 60% hide the CTA, and most load too slowly to hold attention.
Open your cleaning website on your phone right now. Not on Wi-Fi. Not from a bookmark that loads a cached version. Open a fresh incognito window on cellular data, type in your URL, and watch what happens.
If you’re like the majority of cleaning companies we’ve studied, what happens is not good. The page takes several seconds to appear. Images load in chunks, shifting the layout around. The phone number at the top is too small to tap — and it’s not linked anyway. The “Book Now” button, if it exists, is buried below three screens of scrolling. By the time the site is usable, a visitor has already decided it’s not worth her time.
We audited 837 cleaning company websites across 43 cities and 11 states. The mobile experience was one of the weakest dimensions across the board. This post walks through what we found — the specific mobile UX failures, how common they are, and what they’re costing cleaning businesses in missed bookings.
The phone number problem is almost universal
Let’s start with the most basic mobile function: calling. A homeowner finds your cleaning site on her phone. She wants to call and ask a question. She taps the phone number. Nothing happens. It’s plain text, not a link.
62% of cleaning websites in our audit — more than 518 sites — had non-clickable phone numbers on mobile. This is arguably the most straightforward mobile UX failure in existence. The fix is a single HTML attribute: wrapping the number in a tel: link. It takes 30 seconds to implement. Over half the industry hasn’t done it.
The failure is even worse in context. 74% of these same sites have no online booking. So the only conversion path for most cleaning sites is a phone call — and on the device where most visitors arrive, that phone call requires manual number entry. The one thing these sites want visitors to do is the one thing they’ve made unnecessarily difficult.
The first screen determines whether visitors stay
On desktop, visitors see a wide, spacious hero section with images, headlines, and CTAs arranged horizontally. On a phone, they see a vertical slice of that same content — and in most cases, the important elements are pushed below the fold.
The first screen on mobile is roughly 375 pixels wide by 667 pixels tall (iPhone SE dimensions, still one of the most common viewports globally). On larger phones, it’s about 430 by 930 pixels. Either way, you have a small window to communicate three things: who you are, what you do, and what the visitor should do next.
60% of cleaning websites in our audit had no clear call-to-action above the fold on mobile. The hero area was consumed by a large background image, a logo, a navigation bar, and maybe a tagline. The booking button, contact form, or phone number — the action elements — required scrolling.
This matters because mobile visitors are ruthless about first impressions. They decided to visit your site based on a Google snippet. They’ll decide to stay or leave based on what they see in the first 2-3 seconds — which on mobile means the first screen, before any scrolling.
Images that look fine on desktop become problems on mobile
A hero image that’s 1920 pixels wide weighs the same amount of data whether it’s displayed at full size on a monitor or scaled down to 375 pixels on a phone. The phone still downloads the full-size image. It still eats through the visitor’s data plan. It still takes just as long to load.

- Slow connections: Mobile data speeds vary wildly. A 4 MB hero image on LTE can take 3-6 seconds to download.
- Layout shifts: When the image finally loads, it pushes other content around. Text the visitor was reading jumps. Buttons they were about to tap move out of reach.
- Wasted resolution: A 4000-pixel-wide image displayed at 375 pixels wastes 90% of its file size on pixels nobody sees.
The solution is serving different image sizes for different devices — a technique called responsive images. Mobile visitors get a 750-pixel-wide image that weighs a fraction of the desktop version. Desktop visitors get the full-size image. Both see a sharp, properly sized photo without any penalty.
Yet the vast majority of cleaning websites serve the same oversized images to every device. The visitor on a $200 Android phone with a slow connection gets the same 4 MB hero image as the visitor on a MacBook Pro with fiber broadband.
Forms are painful on mobile when they’re designed for desktop
Contact forms that work fine on a desktop become frustrating on a phone. Small input fields require precise tapping. Labels disappear when you start typing. Dropdown menus are hard to scroll on touch screens. Multi-step forms that span a page width on desktop create a disjointed experience on mobile.
73% of cleaning websites in our audit had no contact form at all — which is its own problem. But among those that did have forms, the mobile implementation was frequently poor. Common issues we flagged:
- Input fields too small to tap accurately
- No autofill support for name, email, phone, and address
- Required fields not clearly marked, leading to confusing error messages
- Submit button below the fold, invisible without scrolling past the form
- No confirmation message after submission — the visitor doesn’t know if it worked
A well-designed mobile form has large tap targets (at least 48 pixels tall), uses the correct keyboard type for each field (numeric keyboard for phone numbers, email keyboard for email), shows validation messages inline, and confirms submission clearly.
The cleaning companies scoring highest in our audits — the top 1.3% — use simplified mobile forms. Three to four fields maximum: name, phone, address, and service type. Everything else can be discussed after the lead is captured.
Text readability drops on small screens
Desktop websites use 14-16px font sizes with generous line spacing. On a phone, that same text often renders acceptably — but barely. When the base font dips below 16px, iOS Safari and Chrome auto-zoom when the visitor taps an input field, causing disorienting page jumps.
More common is the reverse problem: text that’s too large. Hero headlines designed for desktop at 48-64px become comically oversized on mobile, pushing all other content below the fold. A single headline fills the entire screen, and the visitor has to scroll just to learn what the company does.
The fix is responsive typography — different font sizes for different screen widths. The headline might be 48px on desktop and 28px on mobile. Body text stays at 16px across devices. Line height adjusts proportionally. These are CSS fundamentals, but they require deliberate implementation that many template-based cleaning sites skip.
Buttons and tap targets are too small
Google’s own mobile UX guidelines specify a minimum tap target size of 48 by 48 pixels with at least 8 pixels of spacing between targets. Most cleaning websites violate both standards.
Footer navigation links packed together with 2px spacing. Social media icons clustered in a row. “Privacy Policy” and “Terms of Service” links adjacent to each other with no breathing room. On each of these, a visitor trying to tap one element frequently hits the one next to it.
For cleaning websites, the most critical tap target is the CTA button. “Book Now,” “Get a Quote,” “Call Us” — whatever the primary action is, that button needs to be large, prominent, and easy to hit with a thumb. In our audits, the highest-scoring sites used full-width CTA buttons on mobile — spanning the entire screen width — impossible to miss, easy to tap.
Sticky elements that help on desktop hurt on mobile
Desktop sites sometimes use sticky headers — navigation bars that follow you as you scroll. On a large screen with 800+ pixels of vertical space, a 60-pixel sticky header is barely noticeable. On a phone with 667 pixels of vertical space, that same header consumes nearly 10% of the screen at all times.
We’ve seen cleaning sites with a sticky header, a sticky cookie banner, and a sticky chat widget — collectively consuming 30-40% of the mobile viewport. The actual content — the thing the visitor came to see — is squeezed into a shrinking window.
Cookie banners are legally required in some jurisdictions, but they should be easy to dismiss and should not reappear after being closed. Chat widgets should be collapsible, not persistent. And sticky headers should either be slim (under 48px) or disappear when the visitor scrolls down and reappear when they scroll up.
A mobile-first checklist for cleaning websites
Based on the patterns from our 837-site audit, here’s what matters most on mobile:
Phone number: Clickable tel: link, visible without scrolling. Only 38% of sites get this right.
CTA button: Visible on the first screen, full-width or near full-width, tappable without precision. Only 40% have a clear CTA above the fold.
Load time: Under 3 seconds on a cellular connection. Test with PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile score, not the desktop score.
Images: Properly sized for mobile widths, compressed, served in WebP format, and lazy loaded below the fold.
Font size: Minimum 16px for body text to prevent auto-zoom. Headlines scaled down from desktop sizes.
Forms: Large input fields, minimal required fields, correct keyboard types, clear submission confirmation.
Sticky elements: Minimal — one header at most. No persistent overlays that shrink the viewport.
Navigation: Simplified. Call button and booking button always visible outside the hamburger menu.
Your mobile site is the only site that matters
Seventy percent or more of your potential customers will only ever see the phone version. The desktop experience is relevant for a shrinking minority. If you have to choose where to invest your time, choose mobile.
The cleaning companies that dominate their local markets — the ones with full schedules — built their sites for the phone first and added desktop polish second. Their mobile experience loads fast, shows a tappable phone number, presents a booking CTA on the first screen, and requires minimal scrolling to take action.
The bar is low. When 62% of competitors can’t even make their phone number clickable, getting the mobile basics right puts you ahead of the majority immediately. When 60% hide their CTA below the fold on mobile, a single prominent “Book Now” button on the first screen is a competitive advantage.
Pull out your phone. Load your site. Count the taps between landing and booking. If it’s more than two, or if you can’t book at all, you now know what 70% of your potential customers experience. And you know what it’s costing you.
